Featherbrooke’s Jasmyn is a child of nature, with her bare feet comfortably and firmly on
the ground. Don’t be mistaken, this shy 21-year-old singer might be a farm girl at heart,
but can easily transform into a breathtaking superstar on stage.
The title of Jasmyn’s debut album,
Jy wens jy kon sę, says it all.
Meaning "You wish you could
say", every person can relate to it
as they have, at some stage in their lives,
reached a point where they didn’t have
enough or the right words to express
their feelings. This album gives a form of
understanding, motivation and hope as
well as love.
Her soothing, pure voice with a Celtic
undertone is balm to the soul. But to
explain the type of music she performs,
Jasmyn needs to explain her musical
influences – which include Enya and
Josh Groban – that led her to perform
light, yet classical pop music. “I am
passionate and excited about the
language of lyrics and melody.
To me, music is the language everyone
understands.” However, Jasmyn’s
shyness nearly deprived the world of
a top-notch performer. “I grew up on
a farm in the Free State and would
always sing to myself. Only the cattle
on the farm, my best friend, Dominique
(a SA Boerperd mare) and the wild
flowers in the field were fortunate to
be my captive audience as a child. I
was so shy, I would never sing where
people could hear me – I rather walked
off into the field, stood on one of our
farm walls and graced the cows with
my performance.”
She started her
career by singing cover titles, such as
'Deliver Me' by Sarah Brightman, 'Memory'
from Cats and 'You raise me up' by Josh
Groban. “I almost gave up because fear
drowned me, but hope gripped me, and
suddenly my outlook on life changed. I
realized that there is more to it than just
performing a song; it’s about carrying a
message over to the listener. My whole
perspective changed and with it, my
dreaded woe, fear, died.”
She became
confident in her own abilities and this
goes to show why Jasmyn secured the
title Face vs. Voice 2010 (this title rewards
an artist’s voice, talent and looks) which
is presented annually by Eurovision
OGAE. This prestigious title was awarded
to Jasmyn after 30 judges from 26
countries voted for this novice. She was
invited by Eurovision OGAE, as a South
African representative, to the Eurovision
2011 song contest that took place in
Germany. “I performed two Eurovision
cover titles, which were translated into
Afrikaans – 'Dit is vir jou' and 'Boodskap
vir jou hart'. I was privileged to open the
stage for the OGAE Rest of the World
25th anniversary concert with these
two songs.”
The songs on Jasmyn’s CD
were carefully planned and chosen,
therefore they all mean a lot to Jasmyn.
“I really enjoyed the journey to become
one with each track, and took great
pleasure in experiencing the birth of
every song – it all came alive and this
was a heart-warming feeling. However,
the song dearest to my heart is track
one, 'Awaiting'. It is about my personal
yearning for meeting with my Creator
– waiting on Him, hearing His voice
somewhere, and feeling Him near.
The chorus and lyrics of the song came
to me in a dream and I just knew how to
write the rest of the song. In this dream
I saw a beautiful woman who shone like
an angel, and how she woke me with a
very strong voice as she sang the chorus.
If I had not woken up, I am sure I would
have forgotten the song.
I immediately recorded the chorus on
my cellphone. And that is how 'Awaiting'
was born.”
This album varies from light classical,
rock, pop, Celtic and contemporary. It
is a 13-track production that ensures
diversity with seven Afrikaans and
six English songs, including seven
original works. The Africa Choir, Impulse
and a choir from the University of
Johannesburg, Voices Plus, who perform
on two of the track, give the songs a
deeper dimension and a rich nuance of
South African culture.
“Thanks to the support of the team, the
producer, Johan Heystek, my parents
and MMX Studios, the process of the
production was not complex at all. We
spent a year producing this album, and
everything worked out perfectly – the
end result proved it. I am keen to offer
the public my very best, and nothing
less.” This girly-girl, who likes to dress up
with jewellery and scarves (she adores
winter purely for the sake of wearing a
scarf ), says if she did not follow a career
in the entertainment industry, she would
have studied to become a dietician. “I
am very interested in healthy living and
to know the specific effects food has on
the body.” Jasmyn does not only focus
on her health and body, but also on her
appearance. She is always seen in stylish
garments and attributes this to her
mother, Estriana’s style inspiration. “She
is a very classy woman who takes special
care of herself and her appearance.
She is the one who guides me when I am
uncertain of what to wear for a specific
occasion. I can always rely on her honest
opinion.”
If you haven’t heard of the
South African girl with the voice of an
angel, do yourself a favour and listen
why the experts in South Africa and
Europe are raving about Jasmyn. You
can’t help falling in love with her looks,
voice and talent.
